Keeping your regular number while using a Korea eSIM sounds simple. The confusion starts when your phone asks which line should handle data, calls, and messages. Those are separate choices. Selecting the travel eSIM for internet access does not switch off every service on your home SIM.

The short answer: Assign mobile data to the Korea eSIM, turn home-line data roaming off, and disable automatic data switching where available. Set travel-line roaming according to the plan instructions. If you do not need your home number during the trip, turn that line off. If you keep it on, check voice, SMS, voicemail, and Wi-Fi calling charges with your home carrier.

These settings help prevent unintended home-carrier data use. They are not a promise that every activity on an enabled home line is free.

Decide What You Need Your Home SIM For

Before flying, separate internet use from telephone-number use.

Maps, email, browsing, and internet messaging need a data connection. Ordinary SMS sent to your home number needs that number to remain reachable through a supported carrier service. A conventional phone call uses the selected voice line and its calling terms.

Ask yourself whether you need to receive bank verification codes, remain reachable by regular phone calls, or only contact people through apps. Prepare account access before leaving, especially if you plan to disable the home line.

Option 1: Use the Korea eSIM With Your Home Line Off

This is the simplest arrangement when you do not need conventional calls or SMS on your regular number.

Turn off the home line in SIM settings, enable the Korea eSIM, and use it for data. Disabling a line is different from deleting its profile, and it does not cancel your home mobile subscription.

The tradeoff is reachability. You cannot count on receiving ordinary verification texts while the home line is disabled. Some internet-based services may continue through their existing accounts, but set those up and test them before departure rather than assuming every service behaves the same way.

Option 2: Keep Your Home Number Active

This may suit travelers who need SMS verification or important calls. Leave the home line enabled but keep its data roaming off and the Korea eSIM selected for data.

Before relying on this setup, ask your carrier:

Can my line receive SMS in South Korea?
Which activities trigger an overseas day pass?
What do incoming and outgoing calls cost?
How are outgoing texts, voicemail, and call forwarding billed abroad?
How does Wi-Fi calling work overseas, including calls to Korean numbers?

Save the answers or the relevant rate page. Receiving a code and replying to a message are different activities; do not assume one free action makes the other free too.

Give Each Line a Clear Name

Rename the lines "Home" and "Datapang Korea," or similarly clear labels. Avoid leaving several old profiles called "Travel" or "Secondary."

This is especially useful if your itinerary includes another country. Before crossing the border, check coverage and validity for the next destination instead of assuming the Korea plan continues there.

Set Mobile Data and Roaming Separately

On iPhone, the data selection is under Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data. Choose the Korea line and turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off.

On Samsung, start in Settings → Connections → SIM Manager. On Pixel, start in Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Assign data to the Korea line and turn off automatic switching where supported. If Android offers data use during calls on another line, review that setting too.

Do not assume an operating-system prompt made every choice you intended. Review the selected data line after completing any travel setup screen. Apple’s international eSIM guide specifically notes that keeping both lines active can still involve home-line roaming fees.

Be Careful With Calls and Message Fallback

Tapping a phone number on a restaurant website may open your regular dialer. Check the calling line and its price before placing the call. A data-only eSIM does not include conventional voice service simply because mobile internet works.

Likewise, an internet message and a carrier SMS are not interchangeable. Review automatic SMS fallback in messaging apps that offer it if you want to avoid unplanned paid texts. A failed app message is not a reason to assume a cellular text will be free.

Wi-Fi calling is also a carrier feature with its own conditions. It can be useful, but the presence of “Wi-Fi” does not guarantee that all destinations or call types are included in your home allowance.

If you need certainty for an important call, check the rate first or use an internet calling service whose terms you understand.

What Happens If Data Stops During a Home-Line Call?

If a map stops loading during a regular call, finish the call and test again before changing your data selection. Do not automatically enable home-line data as a workaround.
